Dear alumni and community of the Department of Philosophy,
Happy New Year! It is a pleasure to bring you this edition of our newsletter LOGOS, with a collection of stories to bring you up to date on what the department has been up to recently.
This year our summer camp ran two week-long sessions, first on Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence and then on Science, Faith and Reality. The camp has been introducing high school students to philosophy and developing their critical thinking skills for seven years now, while exposing many of them to a first taste of life on campus. We are very proud of the quality of the education and experiences it provides, and of the diversity among the students it serves.
Last spring we ran a webinar series on various topics in Practical Philosophy, in which philosophy faculty talked with an online audience of interested community members about their research on topical issues of contemporary importance. Please let us know if you would like to see more of this sort of programming!
We were delighted to welcome two new faculty in Autumn 2024. Christa Johnson comes to us from the University of Dayton as Associate Professor of Teaching and Associate Director of the new Program in Leadership Studies at Ohio State. Jada Wiggleton-Little joined us this autumn as an Assistant Professor after a post-doc in bioethics at the Cleveland Clinic.
We believe that the work we are doing has never been more vital to Ohio State’s mission of “Education for Citizenship.” Alumni, please connect with us to tell us about what you are doing with your philosophical education. We’d like to add new features about our graduates in future newsletters. Your stories help us give the current generation of students a glimpse of the variety of interesting paths that are open to them.
If you are in a position to help our department, please consider making a donation or contact me to discuss specific programs or initiatives you might like to support.
Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, I hope that you are flourishing and that you stay or get involved in meaningful activities in your community.
Best wishes,
Justin D’Arms
Professor and Interim Chair, Department of Philosophy
