Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

1.2 Admission Guidelines

Basic requirements for admission are established by the Graduate School; for a summary see the Graduate School Handbook. In recommending applicants to the Graduate School for admission, the Graduate Committee of the Department of Philosophy pays particular attention to the following:

  1. The submitted paper.
  2. Letters of recommendation.
  3. Undergraduate grade record. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on the standard 4.0 scale) is the minimum required by the Graduate School for regular admission. However, successful applicants for the Ph.D. program in philosophy typically have an average significantly above 3.0. An undergraduate major in philosophy is highly recommended but not a prerequisite for admission.
  4. Graduate grade record, if any (see sec.1.3 below).
  5. Graduate Record Examination scores.
