Congratulations to Dr. Layne Garrelts on her Ph.D.
The Department of Philosophy congratulates Layne Garrelts, who successfully defended her dissertation in April and will soon receive her Ph.D. in Philosophy from The Ohio State University.
Layne Garrelts has defended her dissertation, "Three Essays on the Fittingness of Emotions." Her advisor was Justin D’Arms.
Her dissertation makes a contribution to our understanding of a certain kind of evaluation of emotions. Fittingness evaluations assess emotions according to whether the emotion matches the evaluative nature of its object. For example, someone might assess your admiration as appropriate or fitting when the object of your admiration is in fact admirable and unfitting when it is not. The three essays in her dissertation all attempt to better our grip on this notion by interrogating some question or puzzle that arises in our attempts to flesh out the nature of fittingness.
The department celebrates Layne's achievement and looks forward to the next steps in her academic journey.
