Congratulations to Chulmin Yoon on his Ph.D.
This past summer Chulmin Yoon successfully defended his dissertation, Essays on De Jure Coreference. His co-advisors were William Taschek and Ben Caplan. Here’s a brief description:
This dissertation is about the linguistic phenomenon termed de jure coreference. When two or more linguistic expressions refer to the same object, they are called coreferential expressions. Sometimes, coreference in a discourse can be de jure in the sense that any reasonable interpreter is required to understand the relevant coreference fact to count as having fully understood the discourse. Anaphora is a paradigm case of de jure coreference. For example, when the sentence ‘Tom went to a park because he wanted to take a walk’ is uttered in a usual context, an interpreter who fully understands this utterance is required to understand coreference between ‘Tom’ and ‘he’. This dissertation is a collection of papers on distinct but related issues surrounding de jure coreference.
Congratulations, Chulmin!
