Society for the Philosophy of Science Talk: Sam Baron
"Mathematical Progress" Abstract: What is it for there to be progress in mathematics? And how, if at all, does progress in mathematics differ from progress in other disciplines, such as the natural sciences? We look at a range of different accounts of scientific progress and extend them to the mathematical domain. We then consider the prospects for a unified account of progress for mathematics and science, and the interesting ways this interacts with traditional debates in the metaphysics of mathematics.Sam Baron is an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. This talk is sponsored by the Society for the Philosophy of Science and STS@OSU.
