"The Challenge to Race Eliminativism From Implicit Bias Research"

Abstract: This talk pursues a novel objection to the view that we ought to eliminate racial categories from thought and communication. Drawing on recent research into implicit racial biases, I argue that race eliminativism is incompatible with several known methods for reducing implicit biases. Given that a wide range of discriminatory behaviors have been correlated with measures of implicit biases, eliminating racial concepts and racial language is objectionable for recommending that we relinquish tools with the potential for mitigating discrimination. Thus, implicit bias research supports the view that we ought to conserve racial categories in thought and communication, while striving to excise their harmful effects.
