"Do the Laws of Semantics Lie?"
Abstract: I describe two different conceptions of meaning. One conception posits semantic laws; meanings are conceived as rules. The other conception takes meanings to be unruly. I then argue (i) that the two semantic traditions are in conflict, and (ii) that there is no obvious way of resolving this conflict.
