2025 Incoming Graduate Students

Five graduate students

Chris Caldwell

B.A. in Kinesiology, Occidental College, 2016
M.A. In Philosophy, California State University, Los Angeles, 2024

My research interests center on various topics in the philosophies of mind, language, and science, especially theories of representation, meaning, and reference. In particular, I aim to investigate intentionality, examining both naturalization projects and the Phenomenal Intentionality Research Program. I am also interested in engaging with the literature on perception (esp. sensory individuals), cognitive phenomenology, introspection, attention, and models in science.

Richard Coulter

B.A. Philosophy, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign 2024

Areas of interest: Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Action, History of Philosophy

I am currently focused on exploring the intersection of action, communication, and values. I intend to describe the relationship between value ascriptions and ethical discourse. Specifically, I want to understand how the ascription of a value to an event is coherently revisable in light of evidence. I want to focus on revisions motivated by dialectical communication and self-perception. More generally, I am interested in the perplexing relationships between language, perception, action, and embodiment.

Thus far my education has emphasized formal semantics, the history of German language philosophy, and virtue ethics.

Charlette Hwang

B.A. In Philosophy, Claremont McKenna College

Areas of interest: Philosophy of Mathematics

I am interested in abstract structures and their application to everything from mathematics, physics, to social relationships.

Yuxuan Luo

B.A. (Hons) in Philosophy, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 2024

Areas of Interest: Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Logic

I have broad interests in philosophy, and I hope to narrow them down when studying at OSU. Outside of philosophy, I enjoy reading, traveling, and exploring coffee shops during my trips.

Joseph Phelan

B.A. in Philosophy, University of Chicago, 2023
M.A. in Humanities, University of Chicago, 2024

Areas of Interest: Medieval and Early Modern Philosophy, Metaphysics, Epistemology

My primary focus is on the history of philosophy, mainly the early-modern period. I am consistently drawn to its accounts (particularly Descartes’) of substance, God, epistemic certainty, and the relation of our ideas to the world. I seek to understand these accounts both in themselves and in their connection to the ancient and medieval theories that preceded them. I am also interested in questions of metaphysical grounding and explanation, especially the truth and/or utility of the rationalist principle of sufficient reason.

When I am not doing philosophy, I enjoy taking pictures of my cat, going to the gym, and playing the bass trombone.
