How to pronounce my name:

Charles Crumpler

My primary interests are in the philosophy of mathematics, with special focus paid to the ways mathematicians understand their discipline. I'm particularly interested in the ways mathematicians go about proving theorems. To that end, I am concerned with the epistemic aspects of proofs (e.g. how assumptions and informal modes of inference contribute to the truth of the theorem) and their relations to the formal tools developed in logic as well as the informal aspects of assessing proofs (e.g. whether a proof is rigorous, pure, simple, etc.). Unsurprisingly, I spend a fair amount of time investigating formal tools to make sense of the metaphysical and epistemological assumptions they have built into them and the extent to which they are applicable to the study of mathematics. I also have interests in the philosophy of language, formal semantics, and aesthetics.

Outside philosophy, I enjoy listening to and playing music, reading about the history of science and mathematics, and experimenting with vegetarian and vegan cooking.

I hold administrative roles for the Logic or Language Society, the Society for the History of Analytic Philosophy, and the Center for Anarchist Theory. If you’d like to chat about anything pertaining to these organizations, feel free to reach out to me.
