Graduate students put on Free Will mini-conference

On Saturday, April 19th, graduate students enrolled in Julia Jorati's seminar "Free Will in Early Modern Philosophy" presented their term papers at a mini-conference that also featured a keynote address by Professor Kate Abramson from Indiana University. Kevin Wutke started the conference off with his paper “Dependence and Obligation in Hobbes’s Leviathan" (Mauro Corneli delivered a commentary), then Jamie Fritz presented on "The Situationist Challenge to Humean Morality" (Paul Robinson commented). Dan Giglio's paper "Hume, James, and Moral Arguments Concerning Necessity," with a commentary by Jerilyn Tinio, concluded the morning sessions. In the afternoon we heard Juan Garcia's paper “Reid on Character, Power, and Possibility" (commentary by Eric De Araujo) and Jennifer Asselin's “Developing Developed Freedom: Difficulties for the Free Will Accounts of Reid and Kant" (commentary by Evan Woods), followed by Kate Abramson's keynote address “Dear Rationalists, No That Won’t Work Either: Hume on Natural Abilities, Virtues and the Self-Government Condition.” (Pictured: Juan Garcia delivering his talk.)
